What if your archive is already an artwork?
Unarchiving
CIFRA is a global platform connecting people with contemporary media art practices. We invite you to join Unarchiving, an online conversation with three incredible artists working with found footage and archival materials. This MeetUp is a space to rethink the archive, and what it can become in your hands.
Zoom Meetup, 20 MAY

An archive is never neutral. It determines what enters history and what disappears, whose stories are kept and whose are lost.
Artists have long known how to read against the archive. They simulate, remix, and fabricate archival forms to reveal how memory, trust, and authority are constructed.
Join our free meetup, and you get how
Artists work with memory, personal archives, and found footage

Archival materials can become a starting point for artistic practice

You don’t need to be an artist to join. You only need curiosity, and perhaps something you have been holding onto

Meet the speakers
Across film, research, and curatorial practice, they work with archives as living material. What is recorded is not taken as given, but reinterpreted, reassembled, and questioned.
Bill
Morrison
USA
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker working with archival and decayed footage. His films use damaged and forgotten images to make time visible. His recent project, Incident (2023), draws on surveillance recordings. He describes his work as a form of revision, a re-seeing of images originally recorded by anonymous others.

Experimental filmmaker, researcher, and curator working across diary film, queer theory, decolonial methodologies, and post-Soviet studies. In her practice, autoethnographic cinema functions both as a research method and as a form of personal and political articulation.
